Donald Trump on Monday said in one of his tweets that his threat to ship migrants to the sanctuary cities is taking effect, even though it is still not clear whether such a plan is feasible.
“The Illegal Immigrants who can not be legally held will be, subject to Homeland Security, given to Sanctuary Cities and States” Trump tweeted just a few days after aides insisted that the plan had been shelved.
Neither the White House nor the Department of Homeland Security immediately responded to requests for comment on Monday. And it is unclear whether DHS has taken any steps to implement the controversial plan. Lawyers had previously told the White House that the idea was not feasible and it would be a misuse of funds. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is already strapped for cash.
The White House press secretary, Sarah Sanders, had said during a couple of show appearances on Sunday that the idea was just one option under consideration.
“Whether or not it moves forward, it is yet to be determined,” acknowledging that the idea had been rejected by the DHS lawyers several times earlier.
“The president heard the idea, he likes it, so well, we are looking to see if there are options that make it possible and doing a thorough and a full extensive review” she added.
